Where the Fireflies Go
A Fairy Poem: O’ let the cold winds mourn their glow, let bramble shadows sigh, for fireflies, though gone from here, will one day light July.
Where the Fireflies Go
Where do all the fireflies go
when autumn steals the light?
Their lanterns fade in falling dusk,
then vanish with the night.
No glint upon the meadow grass,
no shimmer through the grain,
just brittle leaves and dying stems,
and skies that threaten rain.
I searched the wood where once they danced,
each spark a golden thread,
but all I found were curled up roots
and shadows where they fled.
Some say they sleep ‘neath toadstool crowns,
in beds of lichen fur,
wrapped tight in frost kissed thistledown
where silent fairies stir.
Know this the Fae keep watch o’er them
In caverns still and deep,
And hum old songs of summer fire
To lull them off to sleep.
So when the thaw unbinds the earth
and crocus dreams arise,
they’ll weave again in humming light
their stories through the skies.
O’ let the cold winds mourn their glow,
let bramble shadows sigh
for fireflies, though gone from here,
will one day light July.
